During his residency at Cité des Arts de la Rue, in collaboration with Lieux Publics, l'Échelle, and Ateliers Sud Side, Shareef Sarhan began the reconstruction of Lighthouse, transforming the original work into a new artistic and material experience: Re-Lighthouse.
The project is not simply a reconstruction of a destroyed sculpture. It is an attempt to reactivate its meaning through a new context. Re-Lighthouse carries the memory of its original location while allowing that memory to travel beyond Gaza.
From the port of Gaza to Marseille, and onward through France and Europe, the installation becomes a moving monument — carrying traces of a city shaped by war, displacement, destruction, and resilience. Its journey connects two Mediterranean port cities through the shared language of the sea, while opening a space for reflection on memory, loss, survival, and the possibility of rebuilding.
Re-Lighthouse was presented in Marseille from 16 May to 11 June 2026, as part of the opening programme of the 2026 Mediterranean Season. Its journey will continue to other cities in France and Europe before its envisioned return to its original location at the port of Gaza.
“The Lighthouse redefines beauty within a city fighting for its survival. It transforms the remnants of destruction into a visual language of hope and resilience — an embodiment of an inner light that persists through prolonged darkness.”
